Why Tonto Dikeh and D’Banj are better off without each other
- Published: March 23, 2016. 7 months Ago
D’banj and Tonto’s alliance has birthed nothing worthy of note, and it reveals a sad but needed truth: They are better off without each other.
Tonto Dikeh and D’banj have parted ways. Scratch that. Tonto Dikeh has left D’banj’s record label,DB Records. Both stars are better off without each other and they know it.
Tonto who worked solo to create a path in music, received a boost in 2014, when D’banj signed her up to his developing record label, DB Records. She has gone on to release a handful of songs, each meeting wave after wave of malicious feedback.
D’banj on his part has came under criticism when he unveiled Tonto Dikeh as his next artiste. In a country teeming with an abundance of music talents, D’banj chose Tonto, a makeshift singer, who is more suited to Nollywood than a studio.
When D’banj signed Tonto, he failed to share reasons why he signed her. But deep down, he knew it was not for her music. Tonto cannot sing to entertain anyone. She possesses neither the talent, the swag nor the skills to make music. All she does offer is media attention, and then angst.
Tonto’s addition to DB Records was widely regarded as a ridiculous move by D’banj, a star whose quality of music was depreciating. Many felt he was adding a player that would prove to be more of a liability than an asset. That asset never really blossomed. Tonto’s time at DB Records can be described as ‘negligible’ at best. She offered more media attention and press, but no real gain.
With her exit, the singer can focus on developing the ‘real talents at his disposal. DB Records is home to group 2kriss, made up of brothers RalphKriss and MossKriss. They are talented at music, but are nowhere on the radar at the moment. With Tonto’s drama and ego out of the way, D’banj can focus on building these acts to success.
Also, D’banj can breathe easy, and focus on a new album. The singer is yet to release a personal album after his 2008 classic “Entertainer”. A lot has happened, and he has other projects out, but none is a solo studio album. He needs to focus on that.
For Tonto, many fans would want Tonto Dikeh to absolutely quit music in all its forms. They would prefer her to raise her arms in the air, in surrender to her perceived lack of talent, accept her place as a good actress, and work at becoming better and growing organically at acting. To be clear, this isn’t personal. Tonto Dikeh is adored as an inspiration and role model to many in Nollywood. Her career has shaped lives, and been a constant source of entertainment for Nigeria. It is simply just believed that she should be content with one art form, and leave the music alone. Right now, that is happening, and Nigerian music fans can sleep.
