Silas Akude, a member of the Lagos State Taskforce Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit, is currently battling for his life at the Emergency Ward of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, after he was bathed with acid by some hoodlums, popularly called ‘Area Boys’, at the Oshodi area of the state, the Punch reports.

It was gathered that the miscreants had trailed the team in which Akude was part of and emptied the can of acid on him, scalding his face, neck and other parts of his body.

The officials were in the area to enforce traffic rules when a commercial bus filled with the hoodlums, suddenly halted at the junction where Akude was manning and one of them jumped down, emptied the substance on him and jumped back into the vehicle which took off immediately.

A task force official who was a member of the team, told reporters how the incident happened on Friday, December 4.

“We all moved out as a team and when we got to Oshodi, we moved to different spots to monitor traffic, arrest road traders and enforce the traffic law.
We had divided ourselves into two that day. A group monitored Oshodi Isale, while the other group went to Oshodi Oke.

Around 4pm, a Volkswagen bus on motion suddenly stopped in front of Silas, and somebody in the bus poured the acid on him. The bus drove off immediately.”

The official believed the attack could have been a reprisal by someone Akude had arrested in the past as it was unprovoked.
