The rapper explained that the perceived smear in the relationship between him and Davido was a misunderstanding.
Ghanaian rapper Deekay who according to him got his stage name ‘Deekay’ from his full name Dennis King started music when he was schooling in Ghana but professionally was when he signed with HKN in 2013, and they had before then released a song together titled ‘High Fever’ having had great rapport together.
On how he feels about Davido opening up Davido Music Worldwide(DMW) and his new signings Dremo and Mayor Kun to, Deekay thinks Dremo is a fantastic rapper, and Mayor Kun a great singer, with his single ‘Eleko’ buzzing everywhere. He mentioned also that both artistes (Dremo and Mayor Kun) are working on a new single for Mayor Kun with a video also in the works. He also mentioned that he and Mayor Kun have something ‘hot’ coming out.
Speaking about the DMW movement, Deekay said Davido is just trying to connect the artistes to Sony Music, whom he signed with, but so far the new label DMW is still being run by his former road manager Banko and he will be letting everyone know his plans with HKN and DMW, if he is going to dissolve one and keep the other or not.
On his relationship with Davido, “It was simply a misunderstanding between both parties but we are really cool” Deekay said, affirming that they are very good friends.
On breaking into the Nigerian music industry, ‘’It really geared everything and made it easier for me in a way because when you are coming and you are on your own and not signed to any record label, it becomes an extra hustle”, Deekay said. He added that the platform really helped him and mentioned that he got known when he used to dance in Davido’s videos, hype and travel together for shows and it was all a good experience.
When asked where it is easier to breakthrough between Nigeria and Ghana, he was of the thought that it is not particularly easy to break into any industry but if he was to compare which is easier to breakthrough between the two neighbours, it would be faster to break into Ghanaian market due to the smaller size of population making it easier to reach the people with your music compared to Nigeria.
On what music means to him, Deekay said it is powerful, helps to connect with everybody and you can actually tell people how you feel through your music, and he believes he is on the right path.
The rapper believes he is on the right path. He talked about his official single ‘Repete’ getting lots of Youtube views, and said Olamide YBNL’s featured remix of the song will soon be accompanied with a video. He also added that he has collaborations in the works with Ycee and Lil Kesh. And also that he worked with an artiste in Atlanta called K Slim which premiered on World Star Hip hop, which gave him good buzz and saw the artiste being sought after for collaboration by other Nigerian artistes.
When asked when he’ll be ready to drop an album, the rapper said he is all about singles for now, he said he has a new song ‘Billy boom’ recently released and an accompanying video to be out soon, and like he said earlier will be working with Olamide, Lil Kesh, Ycee and his fellow Ghanaian acts such as Stonebwoy and R2Bees.
